A man who alleged he was sexually abused by the late priest Malachy Finegan at St Colman’s College in Newry from 1979 to 1985 has settled a High Court case for £170,000.
The 57-year-old plaintiff, CA, claimed Finegan groomed and abused him under the guise of pastoral care, causing lasting psychological harm including PTSD, anxiety, and family damage.
The settlement with the Diocese of Dromore and the school’s Board of Governors includes a written apology from Archbishop Eamon Martin and covers legal costs, though neither party admitted liability.
Finegan, who died in 2002, was never prosecuted despite multiple allegations.
A prior settlement was reached in 2018, and four other related cases were adjourned.
