Indonesia and the EU to sign trade deal granting tariff-free access to 80% of Indonesian exports, boosting economic ties amid global uncertainty.
Indonesia and the European Union are set to sign a comprehensive trade agreement in Bali on September 23, 2025, after nearly a decade of negotiations, aiming to strengthen economic ties amid global trade uncertainty.
The deal will grant tariff-free access to about 80% of Indonesian exports to the EU, including palm oil, textiles, footwear, and fisheries, while ensuring equal legal protection for businesses from both sides.
The agreement, the EU’s third with a Southeast Asian nation after Singapore and Vietnam, responds to concerns over U.S. protectionism and seeks responsible supply chains with environmental and social safeguards.
It addresses past tensions, including Indonesia’s concerns over the EU’s deforestation regulation, and supports Indonesia’s efforts to diversify trade and integrate into global value chains.
Bilateral trade reached $30.1 billion in 2024, making the EU Indonesia’s fifth-largest trading partner.
Full implementation will follow legal reviews and document translations.
