Botswana celebrates its first World Athletics gold in men’s 4x400m relay, defeating the US and marking an African first.
Botswana has declared September 29, 2025, a public holiday to celebrate its men’s 4x400m relay team winning the nation’s first gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The team—Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, and Busang Collen Kebinatshipi—defeated the United States, ending their streak of 10 consecutive world titles, with South Africa taking bronze.
The victory, achieved in a rain-soaked final, marked the first time an African nation won the event.
President Duma Boko praised the athletes, linking their success to national pride and the country’s global standing.
The win came one day before Botswana’s Independence Day and followed Tebogo’s Olympic gold in 2024, making it the nation’s best performance at the championships with two golds, one silver, and one bronze.
