Australia launches $800K national strategy for sheepmeat and wool industries, aiming for sustainability beyond 2028.
A new national strategy, The Future Flock, is being developed for Australia’s sheepmeat and wool industries with $800,000 in funding from the federal government and Sheep Producers Australia.
Launched on September 22, 2025, the initiative aims to create a unified framework addressing challenges like market volatility, climate change, biosecurity, and shifting consumer demands, while adapting to the phase-out of live sheep exports.
It will include state-specific plans, such as a Western Australia roadmap to 2028, and will use evidence-based modelling and existing industry strategies to avoid duplication.
Input from producers, processors, state groups, and supply chains will be gathered through workshops, field days, online forums, and surveys.
The final plan is expected by 2026 at LambEx in Adelaide, with the goal of ensuring a sustainable, profitable future for the sector beyond 2028.
