Temporary flood barriers are being tested in Abingdon to protect 30 homes on Chaunterell Way after repeated flooding.
Flood barriers are being tested in Abingdon to protect homes on Chaunterell Way after repeated flooding from the River Ock, a shift welcomed by residents and MP Layla Moran.
The Environment Agency, which previously ruled out barrier deployment, now plans to use around 300 meters of temporary metal barriers in nearby fields to shield about 30 properties, following new flood modeling and site testing.
This change comes after three flood events in 2024 and concerns over past barrier removals.
While the temporary barriers offer immediate protection, residents stress the need for long-term solutions like river dredging and careful development planning, as new housing continues in flood-prone areas.
Barriers will be stored in Oxford when not in use.
