Sonny Curtis, the songwriter behind the theme for *The Mary Tyler Moore Show* and a founding member of Buddy Holly’s Crickets, has died at 88.
Born in Meadow, Texas, he joined the Crickets at 15 and became their frontman after Holly’s 1959 death, leading the band through decades of performances and recordings.
In 2012, the Crickets were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by a special committee.
A prolific songwriter, Curtis wrote hits like “I Fought the Law,” “Walk Right Back,” and “Love Is All Around.” His daughter confirmed his peaceful passing on September 19, 2025, after a sudden illness, with family by his side.
