Protesters in Jacksonville rallied against turning Baker Correctional into a 1,500-bed immigration detention center, calling it inhumane and demanding its closure.
Dozens of protesters in Jacksonville rallied on September 20, 2025, opposing the use of the former Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson as a large-scale immigration detention center, calling it “Baker Cruelty Camp” and a “Deportation Depot.” Organized by the Jacksonville Immigrant Rights Alliance and local groups, the event began with speeches and signs at Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park, followed by a caravan to the facility.
Protesters raised concerns over the state’s expansion of immigration detention, noting the site’s capacity for up to 1,500 people and over 100 individuals already held there.
They criticized the facility as part of a harmful system, condemned the use of 287(g) agreements that expand local law enforcement cooperation with ICE, and demanded an end to further development.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier defended the facility as necessary to protect public resources, while ICE confirmed the site is operational.
Protesters vowed ongoing resistance, emphasizing solidarity with detained individuals and calling for the facility’s closure.
