On World Cleanup Day 2025, Pakistan’s Maritime Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry warned that textile and fashion waste from the country’s export-driven industry is polluting rivers and the Arabian Sea, contributing to microplastic contamination that harms marine life, fisheries, and coastal economies.
With the sector accounting for nearly 60% of exports, pollution-related losses exceed $200 million annually.
He urged a shift to circular fashion—promoting reusable, repairable, and recyclable garments—to reduce environmental damage, conserve water, cut emissions, and strengthen climate resilience, calling for collaboration across government, industry, and citizens to protect the nation’s marine ecosystems and economic future.
