New Zealand allocates $20M to cut emergency wait times by boosting staffing and services post-record winter surge.
New Zealand will invest $20 million over nine months to boost emergency department staffing, aiming to reduce patient wait times and ease pressure on hospitals after the country’s busiest winter on record.
The funding, drawn from Health New Zealand’s annual uplift, will support recruitment of doctors, nurses, and support staff, prioritize high-need hospitals, and enhance patient flow, senior decision-making, and weekend capacity.
It will also expand roles for advanced nurses and allied health professionals, increase cleaning and orderly staffing, and expand hospital-in-the-home services and flex beds during surges.
The move follows recent infrastructure upgrades and efforts to restore emergency department performance targets.
While progress is underway, officials acknowledge more long-term investment is needed.
