Ottawa man arrested in Spain for aiding 2022 BC jailbreak; facing extradition to Canada.

John Potvin, 49, of Ottawa, was arrested in Spain on September 19, 2025, in connection with the 2022 jailbreak of fugitive Rabih Alkhalil from British Columbia’s North Fraser Pretrial Centre. Potvin, who faces charges of conspiracy to commit prison breach and prison breach, allegedly helped Alkhalil escape by aiding two men posing as contractors. After fleeing Canada, he was the subject of a national warrant and an Interpol Red Notice. Authorities credit international cooperation, including with Spanish law enforcement and Interpol, for the arrest. Potvin is now being processed for extradition to Canada, where he will face trial. Alkhalil, a high-profile gang member with a history of violent crimes, remains at large.
