Five oil giants caused $5.36T in climate damages (2016–2025), Greenpeace says, urging global polluter tax.
Greenpeace USA displayed a 160-foot "Climate Polluters Bill" in New York City during Climate Week, revealing that five major oil and gas companies are responsible for an estimated $5.36 trillion in climate-related economic damages from 2016 to 2025.
The figure, based on the social cost of carbon and data from the Carbon Majors Database, reflects costs from extreme weather, sea level rise, and health impacts, far exceeding the companies’ $800 billion in profits and the $768 million pledged to the UN’s loss and damage fund.
The campaign, backed by over 60 organizations and 250,000 people, demands a global polluter tax on fossil fuel profits to fund climate resilience and a just energy transition ahead of COP30 and the UN Global Tax Convention.
