A new pilot program in Cumbria provides immediate support to domestic abuse survivors by placing trained advisors in the police control room from 4 p.m. to midnight on Thursdays through Sundays.
These independent specialists offer real-time trauma-informed help, risk assessments, safety planning, and referrals to those calling 999 or 101, aiming to reduce reporting delays—especially in rural areas—where isolation and underreporting are common.
The 12-month initiative, led by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Cumbria Constabulary, and Victim Support, could become a national model.
Nearly one in five crimes reported in Cumbria involves domestic abuse.
