The National Ballet of China debuted its original ballet "A Dream of Red Mansions" in Bangkok on September 21, marking its overseas premiere during the city’s 27th International Festival of Dance and Music.
Based on a classic Chinese novel, the two-hour performance tells the tragic romance of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu amid the decline of the Jia family.
Directed by Tong Ruirui, the production uses a rotating 12-meter-wide, 8.5-meter-high backdrop—red-and-gold for prosperity, white for emptiness—to convey emotional and thematic shifts.
The fusion of Eastern literary tradition and Western ballet form was highlighted by director Zhu Yan as a step in cultural exchange between China and Thailand.
The performance, featuring elaborate stage design, lighting, and costumes, received enthusiastic reviews for its storytelling and accessibility through English and Thai subtitles.
All major props were shipped from China and installed over three days.
The festival runs through October 15 and includes performances by international artists.
