Arran Donnelly, 28, was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for causing the death of his friend Ryan Evans, 27, in a high-speed crash in Stockport on February 24, 2024.
Donnelly, driving an Audi A3 at up to 80 mph in a 30 mph zone, lost control on a bend, mounted the kerb, spun, and crashed into a wall, killing Evans in the back seat.
Witnesses described the car as speeding aggressively, and footage showed Donnelly using nitrous oxide from a balloon just before the crash.
Police found six balloons and multiple canisters in the vehicle, one containing Donnelly’s DNA.
While the court could not confirm the drug caused the crash, its use was considered an aggravating factor.
Evans, days from traveling to Thailand with his brother, was described as kind-hearted and deeply loved.
Donnelly, who had no prior convictions and recently became a father, pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.
The judge imposed an eight-year, four-month driving ban.
