Wildfires in northwest Spain, fueled by heat and drought, forced evacuations and prompted large-scale firefighting efforts.
Firefighters in northwestern Spain, aided by military personnel, battled two major wildfires in Lugo and Ourense provinces, both sparked Thursday and fueled by dry conditions and temperatures above 30°C. The fires burned approximately 1,400 hectares in Lugo and 240 in Ourense, classified as "status two" due to threats to populated areas, prompting evacuations of dozens, though most have returned. Over 80 fire brigades and dozens of aircraft were deployed, with cooler temperatures and forecasted rain offering hope for improved conditions. The blazes are part of a broader summer of severe wildfires across western and northwestern Spain and Portugal, which caused four deaths each and burned nearly 330,000 hectares in Spain.
