Vancouver’s all-female fire dragon dance team made history at the city’s Mid-Autumn Festival, breaking tradition with a 20-meter dragon dance.
A group of women from Vancouver’s Chau Luen Athletic Club made history as the world’s first all-female fire dragon dance troupe, performing in the city’s annual Fire Dragon Festival in Chinatown.
Led by 39-year-old Leanne Yu, the team—including Janice Leung, Chantelle Lui, and artist Katherine Meng-Yuan Yi—challenged the traditional male-only role in the 20-meter straw dragon dance, which features lit incense sticks and originates from Hong Kong’s Tai Hang district.
The performance, part of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, was presented by the Chinatown Celebration Society over the weekend, highlighting cultural preservation and gender inclusivity in a longstanding tradition.
