U.S. Steel reverses shutdown plan for Granite City plant, citing post-acquisition commitments.
U.S. Steel has reversed its decision to halt raw steel processing at its Granite City Works plant in Illinois, confirming it will continue supplying steel slabs to the facility indefinitely.
The change comes less than three months after the company announced plans to end operations, citing a need for future flexibility.
The reversal follows Nippon Steel’s acquisition of U.S. Steel, which included government oversight provisions and commitments to protect domestic production and worker jobs through 2027.
The Granite City plant, located near St. Louis, no longer produces raw steel since its last blast furnace was idled in 2023 but continues processing slabs into sheet steel for construction, automotive, and pipe industries.
The United Steelworkers union criticized the reversal, accusing U.S. Steel of backtracking on promises, though the company maintains compliance with the White House agreement.
Similar processing facilities remain operational at U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley and Gary Works sites.
