Two GP clinics in Cessnock and Kurri Kurri now fully bulk-bill all patients, eliminating out-of-pocket costs thanks to a $8.5 billion federal Medicare investment—the largest in the program’s history.
Hunter MP Dan Repacholi and Health Minister Mark Butler said the change means patients only need their Medicare card, improving access and affordability, especially for those facing financial hardship.
Cessnock GP Dr. Riajul Hasan noted reduced stress for patients who no longer must choose between medical care and essentials.

This follows the opening of a $20 million surgical center in Charlestown and aligns with Labor’s pledge to establish 50 urgent care clinics nationwide.
While some GPs previously questioned whether government incentives—ranging from $21.35 to $36.65 per visit—would cover costs, the shift marks a significant step toward broader access, particularly in underserved areas of the Hunter region.
