Sonny Curtis, a founding member of the Crickets and songwriter of “I Fought the Law” and the theme to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” has died at 88.
Born in Texas during the Great Depression, he was a childhood friend of Buddy Holly and helped shape early rock and roll, writing hits like “Someday” and “Rock Around With Ollie Vee.” After Holly’s death in 1959, Curtis rejoined the Crickets, contributing to enduring songs including “I Fought the Law,” which gained lasting fame through covers by artists like the Clash and Johnny Cash.
In 1970, he wrote the uplifting theme for “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” featuring the iconic line “Who can turn the world on with her smile?” The song became a cultural touchstone.
His work spanned genres, with recordings by Bing Crosby, Glen Campbell, and the Everly Brothers.
Curtis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
He passed suddenly, according to his wife and daughter, after being ill.
