Quebec stripped Abbé Pierre of its top honor over sexual assault allegations, despite his death.
Quebec has revoked the National Order of Quebec from the late French priest Abbé Pierre, whose real name was Henri Grouès, following allegations of sexual assault involving at least 45 individuals, including minors.
Premier François Legault announced the decision on September 20, 2025, after a unanimous recommendation from the order’s oversight council.
The allegations, first detailed in a July 2024 report, prompted the government to act despite Abbé Pierre’s death in 2007.
He had been honored in 1995 for his humanitarian work supporting the poor and homeless.
The move follows a similar revocation of French actor Gérard Depardieu in December 2023.
The action reflects Quebec’s commitment to accountability and the integrity of its highest civilian honors.
