Malta seeks UNESCO World Heritage Committee seat for 2027–2031 and new site inclusion.
Malta has applied for a seat on UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee for 2027–2031, marking its commitment to cultural preservation and multilateralism as it celebrates 60 years in UNESCO.
The bid, led by Minister Owen Bonnici, aims to balance diplomatic and technical expertise.
Malta, home to three existing World Heritage sites, is also submitting a new application to include the Maltese Fortifications of the Knights of St John—Valletta’s walls, the Cottonera and Santa Margherita Lines, Mdina, and Gozo’s Cittadella—for inscription.
The initial application is with UNESCO, with a final submission due February 1, 2026, followed by expert evaluation and potential approval by the 21-member committee.
The move reflects Malta’s long-standing dedication to heritage protection and global cooperation.
