Liberia launches campaign to combat damaged currency, urging public respect and warning of fines or jail for destruction.
The Central Bank of Liberia launched the "Clean Note Campaign: Our Money, Our Pride" on September 19, 2025, in Monrovia to address widespread damage to the Liberian dollar caused by improper handling.
The campaign, supported by banks, business groups, and transport unions, aims to reduce the loss of up to L$1 billion in banknotes since the 2022 series was introduced.
It urges citizens to handle money with care, warning that deliberate damage may lead to fines of up to L$500,000 or up to two years in jail.
Through outreach, radio, and community events, the CBL promotes national pride, economic confidence, and responsible currency use, emphasizing that protecting the currency reflects respect for the nation’s sovereignty and identity.
