Iraq launches first large solar plant to combat power shortages and reduce fossil fuel dependence.
Iraq has launched its first industrial-scale solar plant in the Karbala Desert, generating up to 300 megawatts to help alleviate chronic electricity shortages despite the country’s oil wealth.
The project is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on imported Iranian gas and diesel generators, especially amid U.S. sanctions pressures.
Additional solar developments in Babil and Basra provinces, with a combined planned capacity of 1,525 megawatts, are underway, alongside over 12,500 megawatts in various stages of development.
These initiatives aim to supply 15% to 20% of Iraq’s electricity, helping meet a national demand of 50,000 to 55,000 megawatts with current generation at 27,000 to 28,000 megawatts.
The move supports energy security, reduces emissions, and improves reliability during extreme summer heat.
