Indian Railways plans to equip all new Mumbai local trains with automatic doors by December 2025 and retrofit existing non-AC coaches to enhance passenger safety. The move follows several fatal incidents and aims to reduce falls and track-related accidents, which claim around eight lives daily. New air-conditioned trains with sensor-based doors will be introduced across Central and Western Railway lines, marking the largest AC fleet addition in Mumbai’s history. Retrofitted coaches, featuring improved ventilation and interconnecting vestibules, are set for trials in November, with full rollout expected by year-end. The upgrades are part of a broader modernization effort to make suburban rail travel safer, more efficient, and reliable.
