GM Canada laid off hundreds at Ingersoll’s CAMI plant due to weak EV demand and U.S. battery imports, ending hopes from a $1 billion retooling.
Kristin and Candice Paradise, longtime workers at the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., are among hundreds laid off after General Motors Canada extended job cuts through November 17, 2025.
They had moved to the new 37,000-square-metre battery plant in 2024 expecting stable employment, but slow sales of BrightDrop electric vans and a decision to import batteries from the U.S. halted production.
The company cited market demand and inventory management, while union leaders say political pressures influenced the move.
Only 400 workers returned for a single shift, leaving many, including the Paradise sisters, uncertain about their futures.
Both women, who have worked at CAMI since the early 2010s, are now exploring new careers—Kristin in the trades, Candice in labor relations—after the $1 billion retooling of the plant failed to deliver sustained jobs amid shifting EV market conditions.
