Fifteen-year-old Reyyan Demiriz from Türkiye won first prize in a UN-sponsored youth writing competition for her emotionally powerful letter titled "Imagine You Are the Ocean," highlighting marine conservation and the deep connection between ocean health and human well-being.
The contest, organized by the Universal Postal Union, International Maritime Organization, and UNESCO, drew 1.6 million entries from youth aged nine to 15 across 65 countries.
Demiriz’s entry, praised for its heartfelt message, called for caring for the ocean not as a duty but as an act of love.
Second and third place were awarded to a 16-year-old from Vietnam and a 13-year-old from Burkina Faso, whose letters also emphasized the urgency of protecting oceans.
Officials stressed the importance of youth voices, inclusion, and action in safeguarding marine ecosystems ahead of the 2025 UN Ocean Conference.
