A faulty GE gasket caused a gas fire at Taiwan's Hsinta Power Plant on Sept. 9, but no major damage occurred.
A fire at Taiwan's Hsinta Power Plant on September 9 was caused by a faulty gasket installed during the commissioning of Unit 2-2’s gas turbine heater, according to Taipower.
The gasket, supplied by General Electric and installed by CTCI Group, failed under high temperatures near 300°C, triggering a natural gas leak and fire.
The blaze was contained to Unit 2-2, with no damage to other units or main power equipment.
Unit 1 has passed safety checks and is awaiting restart approval.
Taipower found no similar issues in other new units and plans to strengthen installation procedures.
The gas turbine heaters will remain offline until safety is confirmed, and responsibility will be investigated.
Meanwhile, three tropical depressions are intensifying into storms, with one expected to become a typhoon and possibly affect Taiwan later in the week.
