Ethiopia names Eyob Tekalign new central bank governor amid reform and independence concerns.
Ethiopia has appointed Eyob Tekalign, the state minister of finance, as the new governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, succeeding Mamo Mihretu, who stepped down in September 2025.
Tekalign, a seasoned economic official with experience in planning and finance, takes over during a period of ongoing economic reforms, including a market-based foreign exchange system.
Under Mihretu’s leadership, the country reported record $32.1 billion in foreign exchange earnings in the 2024/25 fiscal year.
The appointment comes amid concerns about the central bank’s independence, with analysts warning that political influence could undermine monetary stability.
The government also named Enatalem Meles as head of the Ethiopian Government Communication Service.
