Canada’s new AI minister pushes for regulated innovation, focusing on privacy, deepfake removal, and democratic resilience.
Canada’s first AI minister, Evan Solomon, is advancing policies to balance innovation with strong regulation amid public concerns over privacy, jobs, and cognition.
Speaking at Toronto Metropolitan University in September 2025, he stressed that AI must serve Canadian values, promoting a sovereign digital infrastructure including national data centers and a sovereign cloud.
His focus includes removing harmful deepfakes—especially those targeting children—from the internet.
Solomon acknowledged past regulatory efforts were flawed and will be re-evaluated, while emphasizing collaboration with the U.S. and the need to strengthen democratic institutions and critical thinking in education as a foundation for responsible AI development.
