Brazil’s health minister won’t attend UN summit due to U.S. visa restrictions, sparking diplomatic tension.
Brazil’s Health Minister Alexandre Padilha will not attend the UN General Assembly in New York due to a U.S. visa restricting his movement to the UN headquarters and nearby areas, which Brazil calls an unacceptable violation of international law.
The restriction, tied to escalating tensions between the two nations, follows U.S. tariffs on Brazilian exports linked to the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced for a coup attempt.
Brazil argues the visa limits breach the UN Charter and diplomatic immunity agreements, and has formally protested to the UN secretary-general, warning of potential visa denials for other officials.
The U.S. has also sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Global Magnitsky Act.
Brazil’s government, led by President Lula, reaffirmed its commitment to democracy and sovereignty while remaining open to dialogue.
Neither the U.S. nor the UN has commented.
