Brown was installed as Winston-Salem State University’s first permanent female chancellor on September 19, 2025, marking a historic milestone in the 132-year-old institution’s history.
The ceremony, held at the Benton Convention Center, included the oath of office administered by retired Judge Denise S. Hartsfield, with Brown’s family present.
A native of Winston-Salem and daughter of WSSU alumni, Brown, 53, began her duties in July 2024 after serving as interim president at Northern Kentucky University.
She holds a history degree and law degree from Wake Forest University.
Brown emphasized the university’s $660 million annual economic impact, over 7,000 jobs supported, and strong ties to North Carolina, where more than 70% of alumni reside.
With 4,972 students and $29 million in federal research funding, she pledged to uphold WSSU’s legacy of academic opportunity and social mobility.
