A 25-year-old Bozeman man, Austin Clowes, charged in the 2021 murder of 79-year-old Steve Kilwein, has been released on a reduced $800,000 bail after his family posted a property bond.
Clowes, who pleaded not guilty, was initially held on a $1 million bond following evidence linking his phone and DNA to the crime scene.
Judge John Brown imposed strict conditions, including surrendering his passport, staying within Gallatin County except for court or legal meetings, and avoiding alcohol and bars or casinos.
Clowes plans to live with family in Townsend.
The next court date is set for December.
Kilwein’s children expressed ongoing grief and said they will not engage with Clowes or his family, feeling justice remains unfulfilled.
