Alaska launches online landslide map using 70 years of data to aid risk assessment.
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources has launched an online database mapping thousands of past landslides across the state, compiled from over 1,000 geologic reports dating to the 1950s.
The tool, developed over three years, uses aerial imagery and expert analysis to identify landslide locations, revealing high risk in Southeast Alaska and the northern Brooks Range.
While some areas like the North Slope appear unmarked, officials say this likely reflects gaps in data, not absence of landslides.
The inventory helps communities, researchers, and agencies assess risks and improve planning, and will significantly update the U.S. Geological Survey’s national landslide database.
