A 19-year-old student lost both legs and all fingers to a rapid-onset infection, urging others to seek help for severe symptoms.
19-year-old Ketia Moponda, a university student, initially thought her illness was "freshers' flu" but was later diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia, a life-threatening blood infection that led to bacterial meningitis and sepsis.
Found unconscious, she underwent amputations of both legs and all ten fingers in January 2025.
Now recovering and using prosthetics, she urges students to seek medical help for any severe symptoms, as the illness can spread through coughing and sneezing and may be fatal if not treated promptly.
