Khac Thanh Nguyen, a 53-year-old Vietnamese man, was sentenced to two years in prison with a 16-month non-parole period for cultivating cannabis in Marrangaroo, NSW, after being lured with promises of $500 weekly to care for a crop.
Arrested in August 2024, he was found living on the property for five months, where police discovered 89 cannabis plants.
Nguyen, who had limited English and no support network, pleaded guilty, claiming he did not know the plants were cannabis.
The court acknowledged his vulnerability and the exploitation he faced, likening his situation to modern-day slavery.
