Victoria orders 4 more Chinese tunnel machines for $34.5B rail project amid cost and delay concerns.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has ordered four additional tunnel boring machines from China to accelerate the $34.5 billion Suburban Rail Loop project, bringing the total to eight.
The machines, costing $130 million, will be used to bore tunnels between Glen Waverley and Box Hill, with construction set to begin before the 2026 state election.
The project, largely unfunded, has seen $5 billion spent on its first stage, SRL East, with the state covering one-third of the total cost and the federal government contributing $2.2 billion.
Allan cited China’s efficient rail construction, such as the Chengdu-Deyang line, as a benchmark, contrasting it with delays and rising costs in Victoria’s project, which remains under scrutiny for financial viability.
