Tasmanian salmon farms vaccinated nearly 10 million fish against a deadly bacterium to prevent mass deaths and reduce antibiotic use.
Tasmanian salmon farms have vaccinated all salmon in southeast waters against Piscirickettsia salmonis, a bacterium that caused mass fish deaths in early 2025.
Developed by scientists at the Centre for Aquatic Animal Health and Vaccines in Launceston, the vaccine was administered to nearly 10 million fish before release.
Though not a complete solution, it strengthens fish immunity, supports survival in warmer waters, reduces antibiotic use, and marks a major step in protecting the industry.
