Strathcona County honored residential school survivors on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, marking a decade since the TRC’s report.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report and 94 Calls to Action, leading to the creation of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2021.
Strathcona County observed the day on September 30 with a community event at Festival Place, inviting reflection on the legacy of residential schools and honoring survivors, their families, and children who never returned home.
Phyllis Sinclair delivered the keynote address, recognizing her brother, the late Honourable Murray Sinclair, a respected Anishinaabe leader, first Indigenous judge in Manitoba, and TRC chair who led efforts to uncover the truth about residential schools and advance reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples across Canada.
