Rep. Ryan Chamberlin proposes replacing Florida's property taxes with new fees and a sales tax to fund schools.
Florida Representative Ryan Chamberlin has introduced a three-part plan, "Freedom 1,2,3," to eliminate property taxes by rolling back rates to 2022 levels, imposing a 5% transaction fee on real estate sales, and adding a 5% travelers' fee on rideshares, hotels, and amusement parks.
A proposed 3-cent sales tax would fund schools.
The plan aims to replace $43 billion in property tax revenue, with estimates suggesting the new fees could generate $15.8 billion annually.
Chamberlin says the proposal is separate from Governor Ron DeSantis' efforts, though both aim to reduce property taxes.
The plan will be discussed by state representatives in upcoming meetings.
