A Queensland farm, McCrystal Agricultural Services, was fined AUD 48,500 for unlawfully deducting pay from 66 Pacific Island migrant workers, including over overtime and health insurance costs, and imposing fines under an alcohol policy.
The company and its owner, Russell McCrystal, were penalized for breaching the Fair Work Act between August 2021 and March 2022.
The Fair Work Ombudsman found the business deducted a total of AUD 18,331 without employee approval, with the workers being on the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme.
The company has since corrected the underpayments and updated its alcohol policy.
