A Queensland couple's newborn died from an undiagnosed heart defect, prompting system-wide changes in maternal care.
A Queensland couple, Meg and James Flaskett, attended an inquest into the death of their newborn daughter, Thea, who died hours after birth at Redcliffe Hospital due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect, transposition of the great arteries.
The defect was not detected during a routine 20-week scan.
The parents hope the inquest will lead to improved care and prevent future tragedies.
Their daughter’s death has already prompted changes at the hospital and in the Queensland health system, including plumbed oxygen in all birthing suites and better support for families experiencing stillbirth or neonatal death.
The inquest is adjourned for four weeks to review written submissions.
