Thames Valley Police has banned officers from wearing Pride flag pins or attending Pride events in uniform to maintain impartiality, following a High Court ruling that police participation in a northern Pride festival while in uniform was unlawful.
Commissioner Matthew Barber emphasized the need for police to be seen as impartial in upholding the law, stating only the Union Flag and the force’s own flag should be displayed on police buildings.
Officers may attend Pride events in a personal capacity but are advised against doing so in uniform, a policy intended to balance impartiality with respect for individual rights under the European Convention on Human Rights.
