Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was offered interim leadership before Sheikh Hasina’s 2024 ouster amid protest crackdowns.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was reportedly offered leadership of an interim government on August 4, 2024, just before Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, according to Nahid Islam, a key figure in the July Uprising.
Islam testified before Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, stating that plans for a "March to Dhaka" were moved from August 6 to August 5 after intelligence revealed the government intended to suppress the protest with curfews, internet shutdowns, and violence.
During this period, organizers discussed forming a new government with Yunus, who was formally offered the role.
Islam also accused security forces of indiscriminate killings, including from helicopters, and criticized media control by state and corporate entities.
The tribunal is prosecuting Hasina and others over alleged crimes against humanity linked to the uprising.
