An Indian zoo faces global scrutiny for claiming to house a rare orangutan from Indonesia, sparking concerns over legality and conservation.
An Indian zoo, Vantara, run by Anant Ambani, has drawn international scrutiny for claiming to house a Tapanuli orangutan, the world’s most endangered great ape, with fewer than 800 remaining, all previously known to be in Indonesia.
The facility, which boasts 150,000 animals across 2,000 species, says the orangutan came from the UAE, allegedly captive-bred, but experts question the legality and authenticity of the claim, noting no captive breeding programs exist in Indonesia and that such a transfer may violate CITES regulations.
While an Indian court cleared Vantara of wrongdoing, conservationists remain skeptical about the animal’s origin and species identity, urging its return to Indonesia if genuine, and calling into question the zoo’s broader practices.
The matter is under review by CITES.
