China’s desertification control efforts in Kubuqi, backed by massive reforestation, lifted 100,000 out of poverty and earned global recognition.
China has made significant progress in combating desertification, particularly in the Kubuqi Desert of Inner Mongolia, where 40% of the 14,100-square-kilometer area has been treated, lifting over 100,000 people out of poverty.
Through the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, launched in 1978, China has planted 480 million mu (about 32 million hectares) of forest, increasing forest coverage from 5.05% to 13.57%.
The transformation has boosted local ecology, restored biodiversity, and created new economic opportunities through clean energy, specialty farming, and tourism.
In 2015, the Kubuqi community won the UN’s Champions of the Earth award.
At the 10th Kubuqi International Desert Forum, China launched the Global Desertification Monitoring and Digital Governance Initiative, sharing its big data experience to support global efforts toward zero net land degradation, with the forum serving as a key platform for international cooperation on sustainable development.
