James "Poncho" Barry, a 47-year-old Aboriginal man from the Hunter region, has been honored as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at both regional and state levels.
After a long break from education, he returned to TAFE at 46, earning a Certificate III in Guiding through a fully Indigenous program taught on-site.
Balancing multiple jobs including firefighting and working with Balloon Aloft, Barry aims to launch an Indigenous tour company in the Hunter Valley.
He is also pursuing a Certificate IV in Training Assessment to mentor young people, inspiring others to pursue education at any age.
