Oregon added 6,900 jobs in August 2025, but unemployment rose to 5.0%, its highest since the pandemic.
Oregon added 6,900 nonfarm jobs in August 2025, the largest gain in 32 months, driven by growth in health care, leisure and hospitality, government, and other services.
Health care and social assistance led with 11,600 new jobs over the past year, a 3.8% increase, while leisure and hospitality rose 2.0%.
Wholesale trade declined sharply, losing 4,300 jobs, or 5.5%, over the same period.
Despite job gains, Oregon’s unemployment rate rose to 5.0%, its highest since the pandemic, up from 4.9% in July and 4.2% in August 2024, and 1.4 percentage points above the spring 2023 low of 3.6%.
The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.2% in July and 4.3% in August.
