North Bay’s top bylaw officer opposes new smoking/vaping rules, citing low public support and safety risks.
North Bay’s top bylaw officer, Ron Melnyk, has urged city council against imposing new smoking and vaping restrictions in workplaces and outdoor areas, citing a 2019 survey with only 43 responses showing minimal support.
He warned that stricter rules could harm workplace safety and productivity, as employees might smoke on roadsides or traffic lanes.
While North Bay already bans smoking in city parks, current workplace rules allow a nine-metre smoke-free zone at entrances, with 41 sites approved for such zones.
Melnyk noted that other cities like Barrie and Sudbury have no outdoor workplace restrictions.
He emphasized that enforcing a total ban could endanger workers and the public, and that most smokers already understand existing rules.
