New Zealand to invest NZ$70M in AI research for health, agriculture, with funding starting in 2026.
New Zealand will invest up to NZ$70 million over seven years through the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Technology to boost AI research, innovation, and commercialisation in areas like precision health and agriculture.
The funding, part of Budget 2025’s $231 million for advanced technology, aims to build world-class expertise, create high-value jobs, and strengthen the economy.
Minister Dr. Shane Reti emphasized AI’s potential to improve productivity and outcomes, citing a partnership with the University of Texas as an example.
Applications for funding will open in late October, with support beginning in July 2026.
