EU and Lithuanian authorities thwarted a Russia-linked terrorist plot using parcel bombs in 2024, arresting 15 and seizing explosives.
Lithuanian authorities, in collaboration with European partners, uncovered a Russia-linked terrorist network that orchestrated parcel bomb attacks across Europe in 2024. Four explosive devices, hidden in massage pillows and triggered by electronic timers, were sent via DHL and DPD to the UK, Poland, and Germany, with two detonating at airports and a warehouse, and one in a DPD truck. A fourth failed to explode. The plot, linked to Russian military intelligence, involved suspects from Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine, including coordinators identified as a Ukrainian and a Lithuanian-Russian citizen. The group used Telegram for recruitment and cryptocurrency for payments. Over 30 searches were conducted, resulting in the seizure of more than six kilograms of explosives and detonators. Fifteen individuals were charged, and the case is being handled by the EU Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation.
